Histone Methylation by the Kleefstra Syndrome Protein EHMT1 Mediates Homeostatic Synaptic Scaling

This Neuron study reports laboratory and in-vivo evidence that EHMT1, the gene/protein linked to Kleefstra syndrome, helps neurons adjust synapse strength (“synaptic scaling”) through histone methylation, an epigenetic gene-control mark. Reducing or blocking EHMT1/EHMT2 disrupted this process and affected BDNF regulation. It does not show a treatment for patients.
